Selection of IBA candidates

SUMMARY
The Committee met to discuss the selection of candidates for the three vacant positions on the IBA. The IFP, ANC and DP proposed a consolidated list of candidates to which other parties made no objection. The candidates chosen where Mr. Langa as chairperson of the IBA, Mr Herold and Mr Mphahlele as councillors.

MINUTES
Mr Moeti (Chair) said that communication between members of the committee and potential candidates was "dangerous" and could compromise the integrity of the committee. Members where asked to refrain from communication with potential candidates. Mr Moeti asked if the committee was ready to select candidates.

Ms Smuts (DP) stated that the ANC, DP and IFP propose a consolidated list of candidates.

Mr Kekana (ANC) stated that the list proposed is not final but open to discussion. They proposed Mr. Langa as chairperson, Mr. Herold and Mr. Mphahlele as councillors. He stated that they had looked at experience, maturity and academic qualifications.

Mr Ebrahim (PAC) stated that the people that had been interviewed were of high calibre and it was difficult to choose but their final choice was: Mr Langa as chair of the IBA, Mr Herold and Mr Malefane as councillors.

A member of the committee commented that Mr Langa has served on the board of the SABC and that he was happy with Mr Herold’s skills but he had certain reservations about Mr Herold’s age. The chairperson stated that he thought the discussion of Mr Herold’s age was irrelevant.

A member of the ANC stated that she was concerned about the gender composition of the IBA. The chairperson asked if she agreed with the proposed list of candidates. She replied that she did.

The NNP stated that it did not have any objections to the consolidated list as proposed by the ANC, DP and IFP.

The chairperson asked if it was agreed that Mr Langa should be recommended as chair of the IBA with Mr Herold and Mr Mphahlele as councillors. The committee agreed.
