SUMMARY
This Ad Hoc Committee had been established on 26 May 2005. Members discussed their programme and noted that the closing date for the submission of nominations for the postion of Deputy Public Protector was 2 August. A candidate shortlist would be drawn up on 10, 11 and 12 August; and the successful candidate would be notified on 16 August. He/she would report to the National Assembly on 18 August.

MINUTES
Mr Sibanyoni informed the Committee that the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development was currently discussing remuneration. The Chairperson had indicated that that issue would be finalised by 4 August.

Mr Sibanyoni proposed that there were therefore two options: to postpone the meeting to Friday 5 August, the day after the Portfolio Committee on Justice finalised the remuneration issue. Alternatively, as only ten nominations had been received, they could invite all the candidates to interviews. The ten candidates were:

Mr B Manching
Mr R Zungu
Mr R Dehal
Mr V Samuel
Dr Uys van Zyl
Dr J Delport
Advocate F Rousseau
Professor B Ndaki

Mr S Swart (ACDP) proposed – and was seconded by Mr J van der Merwe (IFP) - that all ten people be invited for interviews on 10 August.

Mr M Mzondeki (ANC) suggested that as the candidates would be flying in, a more suitable time should be considered. Members agreed to meet on 10 August at 10h00.
