SUMMARY
The Chairperson informed Members about a progress report received from the Justice Department on provisions of the Interim Constitution still in operation, and about the Committee process from this point.
MINUTES
The Chairperson asked whether the NCOP Members had nominated a Deputy Chairperson of the Committee yet. Mr F Adams replied in the negative, and pledged to report on the issue in due course.
Department briefing
The Chairperson stated that Mr J Labuschagne, Department State Legal Advisor, had reported that consultations were still in progress with departments on the operational provisions of the Interim Constitution. These sections could either be repealed or re-enacted. A progress report on the outcome of consultations had been requested by 24 June 2005. A Department delegation would attend the Committee’s first meeting in the third session to further inform Members on the matter.
Constitutional Review submissions
The Chairperson stated that the Committee’s brief was to identify those constitutional matters that the Department intended to review, taking into account any representations received and responded to. Submissions meriting further attention would be dealt with in the third term. The Chairperson suggested that the Committee prioritise submissions in its meeting of 24 June.
The meeting was adjourned.
