TRADE & INDUSTRY PORTFOLIO COMMITTEE
1 September 1999
INTRODUCTION TO THE DEPARTMENT OF TRADE & INDUSTRY (DTI)

SUMMARY
The objective was to inform the Committee on new developments, policy issues and target legislation for the next five years. Restructuring and re-allocation of resources was a key component highlighted during the session.

MINUTES
Directorates in the Department of Trade and Industry
Each of the eleven Chief Directors gave an outline of their Directorate as well as defining areas of responsibility, development and growth. Budgets were highlighted as well as personnel employed under each directorate. [Note: Visit the DTI website:
http://wwwdti.pwv.gov.za/dtiwww for information on each directorate.]

Legislation
Key legislation that the DTI would introduce this session and would be:
Liqour Bill
Trade Bill
National Gambling Bill [Note: a suitable person had not been found to chair the Board and this was becoming urgent. Submissions need to be heard and finalized.]

With regard to all three Bills it was anticipated that fast tracking would be used if the bills were to pass through Parliament this session. This was applicable to the National Gambling Bill specifically and the NCOP cycle where it was currently held up.
