SUMMARY
The Committee unanimously passed the two technical amendments that were agreed to by the Portfolio Committee on Education. The Chairperson made announcements on the Committee's planned trip to India and names of members agreed to by the political parties.

MINUTES
The Chairperson pointed out that the Committee had passed the Bill and when it was taken before the Portfolio Committee, the latter agreed to two technical amendments to the South African Council for Educators Bill [B 26B -2000]. As this is a section 76 Bill the National Assembly referred it back to the NCOP. Written mandates were received from Northern Cape, Western Cape, North-West, Free State and Eastern Cape all in support of the Bill as amended.

The Chairperson then called for voting on the two amendments.
Clause 5
The proposed amendment to clause 5 is on page 6, in line 21 after the word "register" to insert "for a specified period or indefinitely, or subject to specific conditions".

Clause 15
The proposed amendment to clause 15 in on page 12, in line 46 to omit a reference to "14(2)(b)" and to substitute "14(2)(c)".

Both clauses were unanimously agreed to. The Chairperson read the motion of desirability and it was agreed to. He then read the report of the Committee's voting on the Bill and it was agreed to.

He said the Bill would be tabled in the House on 22 June 2000. The members of the Committee agreed that no debate would occur on the Bill.

General
The Chairperson announced that he would like members to look at the report of the Review Committee on Education and a report on farm schools. He also announced that the Committee's trip to India would go ahead and the names of members who are going were mentioned. Members of the Provincial Legislatures would also be joining the Select Committee on the trip and their travel costs would be borne by their provinces.

The meeting was adjourned.
