INITIAL DISCUSSION ON GREYHOUND RACING

SPORT AND RECREATION PORTFOLIO COMMITTEE
11 April 2000
INITIAL DISCUSSION ON GREYHOUND RACING

Chairperson: Ms N.R Bhengu

The Chairperson reported that the South African Greyhound Racing Transitional Committee had approached the Minister of Sport and Recreation requesting the legalisation of greyhound racing in South Africa. Presently it is illegal.

Members unanimously agreed that there was a definite need to revisit the issue in the light of the request, and the sharp escalation in acts of illegal activity in the country. In order to deal with this issue, it was decided that comprehensive research was needed. The African Christian Democratic Party put on record that it was opposed to all forms of gambling. However they were not opposed to greyhound racing being discussed.

The next step for the Committee was to approach the Minister of Sport and Recreation and then decide on the stakeholders to approach on the matter.
