AD HOC COMMITTEE ON FILLING OF VACANCIES IN COMMISSION FOR GENDER EQUALITY

AD HOC COMMITTEE ON FILLING OF VACANCIES IN COMMISSION FOR GENDER EQUALITY
20 March 2001
REVIEW OF FINAL LIST OF RECOMMENDATIONS

Chairperson: Ms Xingwana

SUMMARY
As the Chief Law Advisor had pointed out that this committee should submit not more than eleven recommended candidates if there were eleven vacancies in the Commission, the Committee was called back to reduce the final list from fourteen to eleven. Chief Law Advisor Meyer concurred with Law Advisor, Ms Adikari, who had advised the committee the previous week that only eleven names should be submitted. He noted that in the past if too many recommendations were submitted to the President, the list was returned to Parliament for pruning.

After lengthy deliberations it was agreed that the first nine names on the ANC's list remain intact and that two names be voted on for the tenth and the eleventh places. The names from the lists of opposition parties were added to the two names of the ANC to be voted for the two remaining places.

In the end, the final list of recommended names for Commissioner was as follows: R Manjoo, Siqwana Ndulo (Eastern Cape), S Meintjies, B Ngcobo (KwaZulu-Natal), T Kgase, Rev B Khumalo (Northern Province), M Tlake (Free State), G Fester (Western Cape), S de Bruin, N Mayekiso, and N Bhengu.

The names of the provinces in brackets indicate where the Commissioners will be based. All Commissioners will serve a term of five years.

The meeting was adjourned.
