Election of Chairperson

Meeting report

The Committee Secretary introduced herself and welcomed everyone present.

She indicated that Members must elect a Committee chair in terms of NCOP Rule 109.

Mr M Mokwele (ANC, Limpopo) nominated Ms D Fienies (ANC, Northern Cape) to chair the Select Committee on Social Services. He noted that the Select Committee will oversee the Departments of Health, Social Development, Women, Youth Development, Persons with Disabilities, and Statistics South Africa.

Mr P Sibande (ANC, Mpumalanga) seconded the nomination.

Ms Fienies accepted the nomination.

No further nominations or objections were noted.

Ms Fienies was duly elected as Chairperson.

The newly elected Chairperson indicated she was honoured to chair the Select Committee. The trust that is placed in her is an honour, and she is excited for the journey ahead and would serve with the utmost dedication. She acknowledged how the past chairs have set remarkable milestones for the Select Committee, and she will continue to build on the legacy that was left behind. She also pledged to serve with integrity and transparency. She was brimming with enthusiasm for the possibilities that lie ahead.

The Chairperson asked the staff members to introduce themselves.
