Election of Chairperson

Meeting report

Ms W Hassen-Moosa, Procedural Officer, WCPP Standing Committee on Education, announced at 15:15 that the meeting would commence and welcomed the Members to the meeting. She introduced herself and her accompanying staff, including the Committee Assistant, Media Officer, and Senior Procedural Officer, Mr Ben Daza. She then requested that the Members introduce themselves and switch on their microphones.

Mr L van Wyk (DA) introduced himself as Mr Leon van Wyk and turned on his camera, greeting everyone. 

Mr T Walters (DA) introduced himself as Mr Thomas Walters from the Democratic Alliance. 

Mr M Booysen (DA) introduced himself as Mr Memory Booysen from the Democratic Alliance. 

Ms W Philander (DA) introduced herself as Ms Wendy Felecia Kazier-Philander, representing the Democratic Alliance. 

Mr D Bryant (DA) introduced himself as Mr Bryant, representing the Democratic Alliance as an Alternate Member of the Committee. 

Mr K Sayed (ANC) introduced himself as Mr Khalid Sayed, representing the African National Congress. 

Mr F Christians (ACDP) introduced himself as Mr Ferlon Christians, representing the ACDP. 

Ms R Windvogel (ANC) introduced herself as Ms Rachel Windvogel, representing the ANC. 

Ms A Cassiem (EFF) introduced herself as Ms Aishah Cassiem, representing the EFF.

The Procedural Officer then asked Mr N Masipa (DA) to introduce himself.

Mr Masipa apologised for the delay, explaining that he was preparing his device. He introduced himself as Mr Noko Masipa, representing the Democratic Alliance as an Alternate Member of this Portfolio Committee.

The Procedural Officer confirmed that all Members present had introduced themselves and stated the purpose of the meeting was to elect a chairperson. She read out the Western Cape Provincial Parliament Standing Rule 82(1), which mandates that a Committee must elect a chair from its membership. She then called for nominations, asking Members to raise their hands and indicate the nominee’s name.

Ms Philander attempted to nominate but acknowledged that Mr Walters had raised his hand first.

Mr Walters nominated Mr Leon van Wyk (DA) as the Committee chairperson. Ms Philander supported this proposal.

The Procedural Officer asked if there were any further nominations. Seeing none, she declared Mr Leon van Wyk duly elected as the Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Education. She handed over control to the newly elected Chairperson.

Mr van Wyk expressed his gratitude and honour for being elected. He looked forward to the Committee’s work and mentioned he would discuss the details of the next meeting with the procedural officer and how it would be conducted. He thanked everyone for attending and participating in the meeting. The meeting was then adjourned at 15:20.
