Tabled Committee Reports

The Portfolio Committee on Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities considered and adopted its report on candidates recommended to fill vacancies in the Commission for Gender Equality.

Meeting report

The Chairperson remarked that the Committee tried to summarise the expectations on all the candidates. The numbers that Members recommended indicated the assessment process was fair. The list represented candidates that were fit and proper to do the work. The process ensured all timeframes were met and documents were summarised and prepared timeously. The Committee ensured uniformity of questions during the interviews, except for the current serving Commissioners. The Committee agreed to recommend candidates for half-term and full-term roles. The half term posts are to fill vacancies that arose when Commissioners resigned before their term had expired. Full term posts are to fill those vacated by outgoing Commissioners, whose tenures lapse on 31 October 2022.

Adoption of the Committee Report on the filling of vacancies in the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE)

The Committee unanimously agreed to adopt the report with minor technical amendments.

The Committee nominated and recommended candidates for appointment as Commissioners of the CGE. The recommended candidates are:

Half term, part-time Commissioners
Mr Bongani Glenton Ngomane
Ms Leelambal (Prabashni) Subrayan Naidoo
Ms Sarah Charity Mokwebo
Ms Fundiswa Barbara Skweyiya-Gushu

Full term, full-time and part-time Commissioners
Adv Olave Nthabiseng Sepanya-Mogale
Adv Thando Gumede
Ms Leonashia Leigh-Ann van der Merwe
Ms Lindiwe Khonjelwayo
Ms Bernadine Bachar
Ms Mulalo Nemataheni

Further, the Committee noted that since Adv Olave Nthabiseng Sepanya-Mogale was currently serving as a part-time Commissioner, she should be appointed as a full-time Commissioner to ensure continuity and preserve institutional memory. Lastly, it recommended that to strengthen the independence of the CGE and reach, the National Assembly should revise the funding of this Chapter Nine Institution.
