Meeting Summary

The Committee met virtually to nominate and elect a new Chairperson following the appointment of Mr M Gungubele (ANC) as Minister in the Presidency, on 05 August.

Ms N Mvana (ANC) was nominated unopposed as Chairperson of the Committee. She accepted the nomination and was declared Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Social Development.

The Chairperson expressed gratitude for being bestowed the honour to serve the Committee as chairperson. She noted her election was on the last day of Women’s Month. She implored Members to work as one despite their differences, political or otherwise

Election of Chairperson

Ms Lindiwe Ntsabo, Committee Secretary, welcomed Members and indicated the purpose of the meeting was to elect a new Committee Chairperson following the appointment of Mr M Gungubele (ANC) as Minister in the Presidency a few weeks ago. Rule 158 of the National Assembly Rules stipulates that in the event a vacancy arises, a committee must elect one of its Members as the chairperson of the committee. She invited nominations from Members.

Mr D Stock (ANC) nominated Ms N Mvana (ANC) for the position of Chairperson.

Ms K Bilankulu (ANC) seconded.

The Secretary confirmed there were no further nominations. She declared Ms Mvana the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Social Development.  

Chairperson’s remarks

The Chairperson expressed gratitude for being bestowed the honour to serve the Committee as chairperson. She noted her election was on the last day of Women’s Month. She implored Members to work as one despite their differences, political or otherwise. The warmth and dedication of Members and Committee staff is always felt.

Ms B Masango (DA) wished the newly elected Chairperson well.

Ms M Sukers (ACDP) congratulated the Chairperson for her appointment. She gave assurances that the new Chairperson will receive full support from Members.
