SUMMARY
Mr E Ebrahim of the ANC has been elected as chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Portfolio Committee.

MINUTES
Ms F Hajaig of the ANC, nominated Mr E Ebrahim of the ANC, as chairperson for the Foreign Affairs Portfolio Committee. There were no other nominations, and Mr Ebrahim was elected as chairperson. Mr Ebrahim thanked the committee for their confidence in him. The various parties of the committee congratulated and thanked Mr Ebrahim for the work he has done as chairperson for the past 3 years.

The newly elected chairperson outlined the role of the Foreign Affairs committee, which is to enhance good relations between countries in the interests of South Africa. Mr Ebrahim said that foreign policy should serve the interests of South Africa, and work to create a better African continent, along the lines of African Renaissance. He emphasised that policy should reflect the goals of our constitution, and that a New World order should tackle the question of globalisation, trade and investment. Mr Ebrahim concluded by saying that foreign policy should be non-partisan.

The meeting was now closed.
