Discussion
Certain points that emerged from the discussion were:
- Mr Ngubane believes that dualism in the Department is hampering the transformation process at both the provincial and national level.
- Director of the Ministry, Ms Worthington, emphasised those programs that focused on gender equity.
- Transformation of institutions has been very slow,
- The Department is doing fairly well, considering the heavy cuts.
- The need to restructure museum management is seen as an immediate challenge.
- The Department is not aware of any plans for the science and technology component to move elsewhere
- The Deputy Director-General acknowledged the need for improvement in serving the rural community. Science and technology are key targets, as well as rural women - there has been a deliberate move to ensure that rural women are accommodated. Rural towns are accomodated by means of mobile science labs and technology stations. These technology stations are used to assist crafters to develop their strategy, which will in turn develop tourism. Crafts are creating key possibilities for the rural areas.
- They are ensuring that people are learning science and technology in their mother tongue.
- They plan on increasing film funding in indigenous languages.
