Electoral Laws Amendment Bill: adoption

At this meeting, the Committee adopted the Electoral Laws Amendment Bill (B33B-2018) without any amendments. There were no submissions received from stakeholders and the public.

The Bill will enable voters to cast their votes even if their addresses are not on the voters' roll. When registering, voters will need to provide their address or a description of where they live to allow the Electoral Commission (IEC) to place them on the correct segment of the voters’ roll. However, documentation or proof of address is not required. The Bill also makes it illegal for public funds to be used for political campaigning – other than the public funds allocated to a party in terms of the Public Funding of Represented Political Parties Act.

The Committee also adopted its report on the Bill.
