Visit by Kenyan delegation
Meeting Summary
The Chairperson confirmed that the Kenyan delegation cancelled. Although this has been communicated to Members, it was short notice and he thought to come to see if any Members showed.
Only Ms J Kilian (ANC) was present.
The Committee discussed the visit and expressed doubt that the proposed three-day engagement can be realised. Instead, Members proposed two consecutive days for the Kenyan delegation to enagage with the Committee and the Ethics Committee. The logistics of the enagagements will be straightened out in due time. In the mean time, the Chairperson asked that the Committee Secretary should look at securing G26 for a possible meeting during the 2nd week in October after Parliament returns from recess with the Kenyan delegation so that Members are close to the House.
On other matters before the Committee, the Chairperson said the Committee had really only been dealing with the EFF matter and had not had time to deal with the referrals.
Ms Killian cautioned that the matter had really been dealt with in the court process andf the Committee should find out whether the EFF had indeed approached the Appeals Court before penalties can be imposed.
The Chairperson raised the pronouncement the Speaker made in the House on a possible ‘political solution’ to the EFF matter and he asked the parliamentary legal adviser to look into what the status of that pronouncement was.
