Meeting report

The Chairperson reminded Members of the purpose of the meeting, which was to recommend candidates to fill the vacancies in the Commission on Gender Equity and adopt outstanding minutes.

Appointment to the Commission on Gender Equality
The Committee’s Legal Advisor explained that initially the Commission had two permanent as well as two part-time positions to fill. The two current part-time Commissioners applied to the President to have their positions converted to permanent positions. Ms Mfundi Ndzimande’s application was declined and Ms Pinkie Sobahle’s application was approved. The Committee is expected to recommend who will be fulltime Commissioner as three part-time vacancies are now available. The process to convert part-time Commissioners was procedural and they will be writing to the President about the matter.

Ms P Kekana (ANC) said the appointment of Commissioners by the President was unfair since the Commissioners already had an advantage regardless of the fact that they were part-time employees. She added that the process was a learning curve

Committee Members commended the Chairperson on the role she played from the beginning of the process and for remaining fair at all times.

Ms L Van de Merwe (IFP) congratulated the Chairperson and said she had been mutual and caring as a Chairperson.

The Legal Advisor said that the Committee is truly filling four vacancies as it is not depicted in any of the minutes and on the report, and suggested an inclusion of the number of posts on the report.

Ms Kekana proposed Ms Nthabiseng Moleko and Mr Sediko Rakolote for full time positions and Ms Nthabiseng Mogale and Ms Tamara Mathebula for part time.

Ms M Chueu (ANC) recommended Ms Nthabiseng Moleko and Mr Sediko Rakolote for full time and Ms Nthabiseng Moleko and Tamara Mathebula for the part time positions.
