STANDING COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC ACCOUNTS
13 AUGUST 2002
WATER AFFAIRS AND FORESTRY; ROAD ACCIDENT FUND; INTERACTION WITH JUSTICE OFFICIALS; COMMITTEE PROGRAMME: DISCUSSION

Chair: Mr. F Beukman (NNP)

Documents Handed Out:
SCOPA Programme for 2002 (See Appendix)

SUMMARY
Standing Committee held its first meeting discussing procedural and administrative matters. These included discussion on Water Affairs and Forestry issue; international trip; Road Accident Fund; Justice officials and committee programme.

MINUTES
The Chair, Mr. F Beukman, pointed out that regarding the Water Affairs and Forestry issue, SCOPA would ask the office of the Auditor-General to furnish them with a status report on the investigation of the matter.

Regarding the suspension of the Road Accident Fund Chief Information Officer, Mr. W Kannermeyer, and (ANC) pointed out that it is important that SCOPA follows up on the matter, however, the Auditor-General is also involved in the investigation.

A member suggested that a letter should be written to summon the RAF board and give an account of the situation around the suspension of the Chief Information Officer. The chair agreed that SCOPA would summon the RAF board and would also allocate beforehand, one of its internal work groups to prepare specifically for the occasion through their own investigations.

Regarding discussion with Justice officials, the chair pointed out that arranged interaction between SCOPA and Justice on issues regarding report backs from Justice had not taken place this year. He added that it is precisely for this reason that the feeling within SCOPA is that they should meet with officials the following day to hear progress and issues around the work of the Department of Justice.
In this regard, he added that the Chief Financial Officer of the department would be in attendance to brief the committee.

Meeting adjourned.
