SUMMARY
The election of the new chairperson was proposed and seconded.

MINUTES
Mr Mashimbye the outgoing Chairperson proposed the name of Ms Ruth Modise for the position of the Chairperson of the Committee.

Proposal was accepted by the Committee. The Committee had been delayed because it could not make the quorum as some of its members were in a meeting of the NCOP.

Mr Mashimbye said the Committee had members who also sit on the Correctional Services including himself at times and they experience a clash of times. It was requested that the incoming Chairperson would try to improve time schedules for the smooth running of the Committee.

Mr V Ndlovu (IFP) congratulated Madam Chair on her election as a Chairperson. She must make sure that members do not bring politics into Defence and added that the meeting was his last one because his party was being redeployed.

Ms Modise said when they met in 1994 with Mr. Ndlovu and the late Themba Khoza of the ANC and IFP were at loggerheads. However, now in Parliament they were colleagues. She said she would continue their aspirations to be united as a Committee. She further said the programmes of the Joint Standing Committee on Defence were always affected by the programmes of both houses. A programme should be compiled to accommodate all needs. Lastly she thanked members for electing her as the new Chairperson.

The meeting was adjourned.
