Meeting Summary

Meeting report

The Committee met to conduct interviews for vacancies on the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) Board.

PMG did not attend the interviews as they took place in Johannesburg. We are working on gathering all the relevant information and will upload this as soon as we get it.

1.         Opening and welcome
The Chairperson opened the meeting and thanked everyone who was in attendance. The Committee began with the interviews.

2.         SABC Board interviews
The Committee interviewed the following candidates:
Ms Dudusile Ledwaba
Colonel Sipho Majimbozi
Prof Bongani Khumalo
Dr Aaron Tshidzumba
Prof Tshidziambi Tshivhase-Phendla
Prof Mbulaheni Maguvhe

Amongst others, candidates were asked the following questions:

Why do you think you are the suitable candidate to serve on the Board?

If you are appointed to the SABC Board, is there any particular area that you would like to focus on as a Board Member?

Do you or your spouse or an associate employed by a company that has a direct financial interest with the SABC?
What will you do to ensure that the corporation complies with its constitutional mandate, the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), Companies Act, Broadcasting Act and King 111 Code on Corporate Governance?

What experience do you have in the broadcasting sector?

Do you think that the SABC is meeting the expectations of South Africans and fulfilling its mandate?

If you are appointed to the Board, how will you guide the SABC going forward?

In your own view do you think the SABC Board is living up to its mandate to educate, entertain and inform particularly regarding the people living with disabilities?

What is the formal communication between the South African National Council for the Blind and the SABC?

3.         Closing Remarks
The Chairperson expressed his gratitude to the ICASA Council and Executive Management for hosting the Committee. He requested parties to apply their minds during recess on the Board interviews. If possible, the Committee would be meeting on 10 September 2013 to deliberate on the outcome of the interviews and a report will be tabled to the House in the same week. He thanked the members and staff for persevering during the interview period.

It was agreed that the Task Team must meet on Tuesday, 10 September 2013 to recommend candidates to the Committee.
