SUMMARY
Members from different parties forwarded names that should be included in the shortlist except the Minority Front which claimed that the applications were not distributed to its office by the Committee Clerk therefore it could not make any contribution into the process. The Committee felt very strongly that the process should be extended so as to accommodate people who had experience on gender issues who still needed to make applications. A shortlist was drawn up.

Discussion
The Chairperson said that from the ANC side they had already compiled their short list and asked the other parties whether they had done the same.

Ms Camerer (NNP) said many people in their early twenties sent in Curriculum Vitae without a track record. She felt that this was inappropriate and added that perhaps the requirements were not made clear to them on the advertisement. She suggested that all these people should be eliminated.

Mr Chikane (ANC) said that the kind of curriculum that these young people had completed at Universities was totally different from what some of them had gone through.

The Chairperson said to solve the problem parties should bring forward names of people they thought should go onto the shortlist.

The Chairperson said the ANC was not happy with the list and said he needed to extend the process if they could get permission from the Speaker.

Mr Chikane asked if they had a time frame for the completion of the process.

Chairperson said by 24 June the report should be given to the National Assembly.

Mr Chikane said he agreed with the Chairperson for an extension to be granted.

The IFP agreed with the proposal.

Ms Southgate (ACDP) said she went through the Curriculum Vitae and there was good potential for interviews.

Mr Chikane said most of the people who had applied were young and lacked experience.

The IFP suggested that members should be more specific about want they want.

Ms Southgate suggested that they should look from the legal point of view taking into cognisance of the labour Laws of the country.

Mr.J Blanche (FA) commented that they should be very careful with the selection process because young people may bring in new experiences.

Ms Southgate proposed that they should take common names from the list of parties and make a shortlist.
