STUDY TOUR; COUNCIL FOR THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT BILL [B16A-2000]: DISCUSSION

PUBLIC WORKS PORTFOLIO COMMITTEE
20 September 2000
STUDY TOUR; COUNCIL FOR THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT BILL [B16A-2000]: DISCUSSION

Chairperson: Mr Hlengwa (IFP)

Study tour
The Chair noted a letter from the Foreign Affairs Department about the Committee's planned study tour to Britain. The letter outlines the mission and preparation for the tour in detail and requested the committee to provide the dates for the tour. It suggested that the tour could take place possibly in the second week of November.

The Chair looked at the parliamentary programme, which indicates that that is when constituency work begins. Mr Louw (ANC) said because of the local government elections he does not foresee any possibility of a tour taking place in November.

An ANC member asked the committee to postpone the tour till after the elections and the festive season.

Council for the Built Environment Bill
The Committee was supposed to look at the amendments it proposed for the Council for the Built Environment Bill and establish if the amendments made to the Bill were as agreed to.

There was a delay, as the Department did not have the Portfolio Committee's amendments to the Bill [B16A-2000] available. The committee decided to meet after lunch to give the Department more time.

When the Committee met again, members did not have copies of the original Bill with which to verify if the amendments made to the Bill were as agreed to. A subcommittee was set up and given the task to check if the amendments made to the Bill were as agreed to and then report back to the Committee next week.

The meeting adjourned.
