Draft report on the Remco Matter
The Chairperson said that the Committee was empowered by the AGSA Act to recommend to the President that the Auditor General as suggested by the Remuneration receive a salary package similar to that of the Chief Justice.

Mr Jonny Ramrock Committee Secretary said that the Committee was mandated by the Parliamentary rules to make a recommendation to the president regarding the adjustment of Mr Terrence Nombembe AGSA to be substantially the same as that of the Chief Justice. He said that Section 7. (ii) (b) of the Auditor General Act would have to be reviewed by the Committee.
The Committee therefore recommended that the AGSA salary package should be increased to R 2, 5million per annum, effective from 15 November 2006.

The Chairperson invited Members to agree or disagree, so that the report could be adopted.

Dr G George (DA) said that the DA disagreed with the recommendation.

Mr G Mackenzie (DA) said that his party objected to the recommendation.

Mr K Moloto (ANC) suggested the adoption of the report.

The Chairperson suggested that Members vote on the matter because there was no consensus.

Eight ANC Members agreed with the recommendation on the salary increment of the Auditor General. Two Members of the DA and one member from COPE voted against the recommendation.

The Chairperson said the Committee recommended that the salary package of the AGSA be increased according to Option 6 of the Alexander Forbes document and backdated from October 2006.

The meeting was adjourned.
