Meeting report

The Chairperson noted that the Department of Tourism was scheduled to brief the Committee on its 2008/09 Annual Report in the near future. As a result, he identified a number of issues that the Committee could raise with the Department during this engagement.

The Committee had to find out whether the cost of establishing the Department had affected it negatively. As part of its oversight, the Committee must establish whether the allocated funds were spent on what they were intended for and whether the Department had met its objectives. If the Department had not done so, then reasons had to be furnished. The Department would also have to explain its plans for transformation of the industry, business growth and state of readiness for the 2010 World Cup. Additionally, he stated that the Department must be involved in the debate on the need to develop tourism as a key component of economic growth in South Africa. Lastly, he urged Members to study the report so that they were prepared for the meeting.

Ms M Shinn (DA) asked who from the Department would answer questions posed by the Committee.
The Chairperson responded that it was normally the Director-General in his or her capacity as the accounting officer.

Ms C Zikalala (IFP) asked if questions would be posed to the Minister as well

The Chairperson stated that if a special need arose for the Minister to be at the meeting then he or she would be called to appear before the Committee.

The meeting was adjourned.
