Meeting Summary

The Committee considered its report on the budget vote of the Department of Trade and Industry. Members proposed a few technical amendments and voted in favour of the report.

Meeting report

The Chairperson requested Members to review the Report and recommend any changes to it. At the same time, he suggested that an introduction be inserted into the report.
Members supported the proposal on the basis that it would provide a more detailed guide on the focus of the actual budget.

Mr M Oriani-Ambrosini (IFP) was impressed that the report was receiving this much attention from the Committee. However, he argued that it was not necessary for the entire Committee to be present to fix the report, as these were merely technical language issues which should be left to the content advisor to take care of.

There was general agreement with this statement.
Mr Ambrossini later expressed concern that the report gave the impression that the Committee supported Kula.

A member of the Committee stated that the matter had been discussed over many years. The Committee had no option but to support Kula, otherwise it would suffer the same fate as Ntsiki, which had ended in failure.

The Chairperson acknowledged that there were a lot of outstanding issues surrounding this matter. As a result, the Committee had asked Kula to table a report on its operations. The issue would be debated at a later meeting as this was not the appropriate time to deal with the matter.
The Chairperson noted that content advisor would make the minor changes to the report.
The report was adopted by the Committee with the amendments proposed.
The meeting was adjourned.
