JOINT STANDING COMMITTEE ON DEFENCE

3 June 1998

SWEDEN'S PROPOSAL TO SELL FIGHTER AIRCRAFT & SUBMARINES TO SA: BRIEFING

The Swedish Minister of Defence, Bjorn von Sydow, met with the committee. Also present was the Swedish Ambassador.

Mr von Sydow has been holding discussions with the South African Ministry of Defence to promote the sales of Gripen fighter aircraft and Gotland submarines to the SANDF as well as a training exchange of military personnel involved in international peace-keeping operations.

It was made clear to Mr von Sydow that the aircraft/submarine deal hinges on the generosity of the offset packages and he said that this message will be conveyed to Saab and Celsius.

Mr Mashimbe (ANC) said that Brazil plans to buy 130 Gripers (compared with 30/40 by South Africa) and asked whether these could not be manufactured in South Africa.
