The Week Ahead: President Appears & Strategic Planning Workshop

None

A busy and eclectic week of parliamentary action beckons.

The President's appearance, a strategic planning workshop, a Ministerial Briefing Session, Oral Question-and-Answer sessions, legislative business, and a few high-profile Committee meetings should mean plenty of fizz.

Parliament will hold a two-day strategic planning workshop on Thursday and Friday.

The Financial Management of Parliament and Provincial Legislatures Act requires that Parliament develop a new Strategic Plan within six months after the national elections. The strategic planning process will result in the legislature deciding on priorities and outcomes for the 7th Parliament and re-aligning resources.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to field questions related to, among other things, the government’s plans to fight poverty and unemployment, the signing of the Health Compact Bill and plans to deal with business extortion when he appears in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) on Thursday. The NCOP has arranged a Ministerial Briefing Session on Tuesday. The focus is on challenges facing the timely delivery of infrastructure to communities. These events are a regular feature of the NCOP’s programme and serve as a platform for the Executive and provinces to discuss and highlight national and provincial perspectives on issues.

The National Assembly has scheduled two sittings. On Tuesday, lawmakers will consider reports on the determination of salaries, allowances and benefits for members of the Commission for Gender Equality. They will also consider a draft resolution debated in mini-plenaries on 6 September on the need for a parliamentary investigation on the impact of the crime of extortion in South Africa.

The following day's main agenda includes Question Time with select Ministers in the Governance Cluster. The participating ministers include the Minister in the Presidency, the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, the Minister of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, the Minister of Public Service and Administration, and the Minister of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities. View here
