The Week Ahead: Parliament is winding down
The constituency and leave period beckons for NA MPs, with Thursday scheduled as the last plenary sitting day.
NCOP delegates will conclude their business a week later on 11 December.
The practice of Oral Questions and Replies is an established part of the parliamentary day where Cabinet Members account to Parliament for the exercise of their powers and performance of their functions. Select Ministers in the Governance Cluster will answer oral questions in the NCOP on Tuesday. On Thursday, the Deputy President will be probed on a variety of issues in line with the broad tasks delegated to him.
In between, there will be a debate to mark World Aids Day on Wednesday, and delegates will consider several bills: the Division of Revenue Amendment Bill, the Taxation Laws Amendment Bill, the Tax Administration Laws Amendment Bill, the Revenue Laws Amendment Bill, and the Rates and Monetary Amounts and Amendment of Revenue Laws Bill.
Elsewhere, the Minister of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities will make a statement on Disability Rights Awareness Month in the National Assembly on Tuesday. At the same sitting, the House will consider the Transport Appeal Tribunal Amendment Bill and assorted Committee Reports.
Thursday will be a marathon sitting, scheduled to run from 10 a.m. until 16:30 p.m. The NA will conclude its processing of the mini-budget: it will consider the Standing Committee on Appropriations report on the Special Appropriation Bill, the 2024 Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement, and the Adjustments Appropriation Bill . The House will round off its programme with farewell speeches.
Beyond this, the week commences with a media briefing by four Committee Chairpersons belonging to the Economics Cluster. This is the second weekly committee cluster media engagement. According to Parliament, the aim of these briefings is to enable openness, public participation and accountability in the work of Parliament.
