The Week Ahead: It’s a wrap for 2024
After nearly six months, the 7th Parliament will rise this week for the December recess.
In customary fashion, the National Council of Provinces ends a week later than the National Assembly. The upper chamber will conclude its business on Wednesday, and delegates will join their NA counterparts in constituency work until Friday, 13 December.
Lawmakers from both Houses will then be on leave until early January, resume constituency work and return to Parliament in mid to late January.
Before it departs, the NCOP chamber has some significant business and has scheduled two sittings.
On Tuesday, the House is provisionally scheduled to consider four bills—the Older Persons Amendment Bill, the Special Appropriation Bill, the Global Minimum Tax Bill, and the Global Minimum Tax Administration Bill—and assorted committee reports.
The following day, it will conclude Parliament’s processing of the mini-budget when it passes the Adjustments Appropriation Bill. In addition, the House will consider the Report of the Select Committee on Appropriations on the Proposed Division of Revenue and the Conditional Grant Allocations to Provinces and Local Government. It will round off the programme with farewell speeches by provincial delegates.
Away from Parliament, the Speaker of the NA is leading a multiparty parliamentary delegation to the 56th Southern African Development Community Parliamentary Forum (SADC-PF) Plenary Assembly in Livingstone, Zambia, from 8 to 15 December 2024.
The schedule is thin in the committee corridor, with only two meetings.

During constituency periods MPs have a duty to:
- Be available to the public
- Help solve problems and
- Report back to their constituents on what is happening in Parliament
The purpose of these periods is to encourage MPs to remain in contact with the people they represent.
People's Assembly aims to connect the public to their elected representatives. One way of doing so is through our Replocator tool, which allows you to search for the elected representative in your area.
